– I don’t do things by halves. It’s all or nothing.

After 18 years in the supplier industry, Jah Langleite chose to join the Red Cross – and not a moment too soon.

– Jeg gjør ikke ting halvveis. Det er alt eller ingenting.

– Here, we have the opportunity to drive change and help set the course toward what we want to create within the organization.

– It’s about developing effective solutions so that the Red Cross can reach even more people with the help they need.

Jah Langleite, IT Senior Architect, Norwegian Red Cross

As an IT Senior Architect, he is responsible for many of the solutions used across the Norwegian Red Cross. Much of his daily work involves simplifying life for colleagues throughout the organization.

– Many people in IT are used to being told what the customer wants and then delivering according to that brief. But here, we are involved in the entire process, from mapping out needs to delivering the final product. This gives us a great sense of ownership over the work we do.

A “Yes” Man

When Jah joined the IT department at the Norwegian Red Cross seven years ago, he was already a veteran. With 18 years of experience in the supplier industry, he had gained extensive and broad IT expertise.

For ten years, he had been a consultant and technical lead for the Red Cross, spending several days a week with those who would later become his colleagues. So when the opportunity to officially join the team arose, the decision was easy.

– I had grown accustomed to a work pace that wasn’t healthy.

– It went fine for many years. I was used to it and became somewhat blind to the situation. But during my years working with the Red Cross team, I noticed a significant difference in the work environment and a completely different level of job satisfaction. That was what ultimately convinced me to make the change.

Jah has no regrets. While there’s still plenty of work to be done, it’s no longer about chasing overtime hours and a paycheck. His motivation now comes from working for a cause that truly matters.

In bright, open office spaces, ten employees and a few external consultants work together. Walking through the door in the morning, there’s always a good atmosphere, Jah says.

This is a great place to come to work. We care about each other, and there’s a culture of openness and safety, where it’s okay to disagree or make mistakes and learn from them.

I think we have great dynamics, working together to achieve something meaningful.

Safety and Openness

Much of Jah’s daily work involves ensuring that the Red Cross IT architecture aligns with key principles.

– Automating processes helps the organization work more efficiently and effectively, he explains.

For a long time, he worked on simplifying the login process. Initially, there were 20 different systems, each with its own username and password, which led to frustration. After Jah completed his work, users now only have to deal with one system. These are the kinds of improvements he’s passionate about.

When we make systems easier to use, people have a better day. This applies not only to employees but also to the 42,000 volunteers the Red Cross relies on. When we make it easier for them to contribute, it might even encourage more volunteers to join.

Expectations

A strong desire to contribute to something meaningful is a common trait among Jah’s colleagues. But not at the cost of their health. This mindset contrasts with the supplier industry, he believes. Many in IT may not realize that a humanitarian organization can be a relevant place to work.

– I became somewhat blind to my own situation, and I think many others are too. Looking back, I realize I should have made a change sooner.

Jah Langleite, IT Senior Architect, Norwegian Red Cross

– It’s a different way of viewing each employee. I’m willing to go the extra mile when needed, and in the Red Cross, the stakes are higher than in many other places. There’s always more we can achieve. But when overtime becomes a constant expectation, it eventually becomes a burden. Here, it’s different. Our efforts are appreciated in a unique way, and we’re much more mindful about overtime. The goal is to ensure people can thrive over time.

Today’s workout was completed before work even began. Jah isn’t one to sit on the couch – he has too much energy and too many interests for that.

Despite having two children, he finds time for photography, cycling, and high-level cooking. Any one of these passions could easily become a full-time job.

Not Doing Anything in Halves

– When I get involved in something, it quickly turns into a passion. That’s true for both my work and my free time. I don’t do things halfway; it’s all or nothing.

Most of Jah’s free time is spent road cycling. Every year, he competes in 10-12 races in Norway and 3-4 abroad, including national and world championships. Though modest about his achievements, he shares that at last year’s national championship, he finished in second place. Soon, new races will be on the horizon, and after work, there will be a few more miles to ride. There’s not much time for relaxation, but Jah wouldn’t have it any other way.

– I’m really looking forward to getting back on my bike. That’s where I find the most relaxation.
